Are Spider Monkeys Endangered?
Yes and no.
There are many different species of Spider Monkeys, and each type has its own
threat level due to various environmental factors.
According to Valley Zoo School, there are
3 spider monkey species that are listed as "Endangered" by either USESA or IUCN: the white-bellied spider
monkey, the white-whiskered spider monkey, and the brown-headed spider monkey. Being "endangered" in this case
means that the species has at least a 20% chance of becoming extinct in the wild within 20 years or 5 spider
monkey generations.
The IUCN lists the black-handed and black spider monkeys as
Vulnerable, while the black-faced black spider monkey is considered "Lower Risk."
